One of the most critical issues that all food manufacturers face is sanitation. Every day the news reports another food recall caused by outbreaks of salmonella, e-coli or listeria along with the number of people that became sick or die as a result of the incident.
The client that hired EAD to design their process waste system fortunately had not yet made the news. However, they did know that if they didn’t get their sanitation issues solved quickly, they would soon be at the brink of both a health and public relations disaster. Using their expertise in hygienic design and construction, EAD’s engineering team went to work to protect the brand and market value of their client, a well-known Fortune 500 multinational food manufacturer.
The company hired EAD to investigate the root cause of the sanitation issue and develop a plan to mitigate it. What EAD discovered was that the entire existing sanitary sewer system needed to be replaced. The chemicals in the plant and the construction materials selected for the sewer that had been in place since the 1960’s had completely deteriorated the client’s sanitary sewer system.
Once the situation was diagnosed, the manufacturer decided that rather than close their facility down and take millions of dollars in losses to instead hire EAD to provide engineering design and construction management support for the replacement of their entire existing sanitary sewer system. EAD implemented double wall containments constructed of metal studs and poly, along with providing negative ventilation for the construction area to ensure no cross-contamination issues could occur. Gowning rooms, travel route planning and strict sanitation procedures also aided in being able to perform without incident. The challenge for EAD was that all the work had to be completed during the plant’s normal operating hours under a 24/7/365 production schedule and without contaminating any of the open food streams.
