Automation at Its Finest
A manufacturing facility in Atlantic, IA specializes in producing engine bearings and bushings. Recognizing the importance of data acquisition and scalable HMI systems, the facility aimed to standardize its operations. However, due to numerous stand-alone processes and the segmented nature of plant operations, implementing a SCADA/HMI package presented several challenges. One of the most significant hurdles was integrating communication with legacy Omron PLCs in the wastewater treatment system.
Automation Integration
To streamline operations, a solution was developed to connect all the necessary components. A redundant WinCC server application was designed and installed, including the configuration of both servers, implementation of the WinCC application, and setup of an OPC server to facilitate communication with the Omron PLCs via a serial-to-Ethernet gateway. Additionally, Web Navigator functionality was enabled, allowing remote access across the plant network. Working closely with plant staff, the system was installed, tested, and commissioned within days—without disrupting the wastewater treatment process.
